HOWL: B. Small

Category: , ,

So there's this dude out in Florida whose worth a listen. B. Small is a pretty young producer, but has serious potential. Small produced his first mixtape, Weekend After Next, last year. What the debut lacked in lyricism was defintiely made up with production. Last I heard, Small has been working with a diverse catalog of emcees on his new tape, due some time this year. I'm looking forward to hearing it and will be sure to post it when it's released. Download the entire album below.

ON THE ROAD: The Black Keys

Category: , , , ,

I don't think anyone would contest Pharoahe Monch's claim that "The Black Keys got so much soul." Truth is The Keys got more than "so much soul," dude's are drenched in soul. Proof you may ask? Perhaps, the fact that they've already released a hip hop album featuring the likes of Mos Def and GZA. Or if that doesn't suffice just listen to "Tighten Up" produced by DJ Danger Mouse. Off of their new album Brothers, this joint will definitely get you singing. In lieu of Brothers' May 18 release, The Black Keys will also be taking their soulful music on the road. Check the single below. Tour dates and video for Blakroc's "Aint Nothing Like You" after the jump.

BEATNIKS AND VIDS: Snoop Dogg & Nardwuar

Category: , , ,

For those of you who don't know Nardwuar, he's a wacky interviewer from Vancouver, BC. When Nardwuar interviews artists, he does massive amounts of research hoping to surprise the interviewee with inane information from their past. You can see Nardwuar at his finest when interviewing N.E.R.D. As seen in past interviews, Snoop Dogg is obviously a fan of the interviewer. The west coast rapper recently had some time to catch up with Nardwuar following his show in Vancouver. Check the video above.

BIG SUR SUNDAY: 03/28/10

Category: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

It's been pretty difficult choosing Big Sur Sunday playlists. I've always tried to make it a diverse catalog of songs from various house/electronic subgenres. Basically, I never wanted to make the list too party or too chill like most blogs do. This week however may not be the best example of that. I would say its a little banger heavy. I mean tis the season, wouldn't you say? Nevertheless, this Big Sur Sunday is still guaranteed to get you listening, bobbing and most importantly dancing. Individual downloads and zip download below. Stream the tracks at the bottom of the post.

Phil Ade is an up and coming rapper from Maryland. He's part of the DMV's 368 Music Group. Last December, he released his mixtape Starting On JV. Dude cuts hard over some unconventional samples. The video for the tapes single, "Hollywood", has been featured throughout the hip hop blogosphere and on BET. A talented up and comer, I'm looking forward to seeing this dude evolve. Mixtape download link below and video after the jump.

Shout out to Itstheincrowd for the tape and video.

BEATNIKS AND VIDS: Erykah Badu

Category: ,

Video for Miss Erykah Badu's "Windowsill" was just released. You can check it at her site. Interestingly, it was inspired by Matt and Kim's fantastic video for "Lessons Learned" (featured above). Lesson learned from this music video reimagining: With the use of some Zapruderesque special effects, the completely absurd can easily be transformed to the politically conscious. It is nevertheless a dope video.

HOWL: Charles Hamilton Mixtape

Category: , ,

So the XXL Freshman Class of 2009 have shown up - Cudi, Asher, Wale, B.o.B. There are however a few dudes that have still yet to bloom. Charles Hamilton is one of those dudes. He picked up a lot of shit for one of his previous mixtapes. and was thus dropped from Interscope. This one on the other hand is controversy-free and a straight banger. Below is a download to both Paranoialty, my favorite track from the album, and the full mixtape, The Binge Volume 3: Charles Hamilton's Last Mixtape. Also, after the jump is a hilarious clip that highlights the hip hop communities hate for Hamilton.

Noteworthy Tracks: Japanislike, Prada Body Bag, Paranoialty,

HOWL: Broken Social Scene

Category:

As you all probably know, Broken Social Scene's "World Sick" was released a month or so ago. My reaction to listening to the song revealed what I like to think of as a BSS rule of thumb. Never listen to a single BSS track without having already listened to the entire album. While I was totally feeling "World Sick", the track also felt a bit incomplete. BSS, more than any other band, can only be fully appreciated in full albums. Their albums are indeed aural rollercoaster rides consisting of grand horn orchestrations and chaotic guitar solos. This week BSS has released two more tracks, "Forced to Love" and "All to All", available for download via their site. Personally, I won't be purchasing or listening to the tracks. Instead, I'll be patiently waiting Foreginveness Rock Record's May 4th release. Peep the tracks below.

HOWL: Trackstar the DJ's Jay Z vs Lupe Fiasco

Category: , , , ,

As we all know, New York has always had a special place in it's heart for hip hop. It is in fact the birthplace and has homed acts like Pac, Notorious and Jigga. Unfortunately, NY hasn't produced too many greats in recent years. Instead, Chicago has emerged as a new wave Hip Hop mecca. Mainstream acts such as Common, Rhymefest, Kanye and Lupe all hail from the windy city (Not to mention indie hipsters Kid Sister, Flosstradamus and the Cool Kids). Trackstar the DJ juxtaposes two of each city's best on his new mixtape: From Marcy to Madison St: Jay-Z vs Lupe Fiasco. The album is basically a lyrical highlight reel reminding the listener how great these two emcees actually are. Download link below.
